Well the Minister of Fisheries has got his lines in a tangle again. Jim Anderton, after delivering a well reasoned speech at the Maori fisheries conference- hosted by Ngati Kahungunu- suddenly launched an attack on Maori fishers- claiming that they are deliberately plundering the fish stocks of New Zealand waters.
This has created a great deal of anger amongst iwi fishers and Te Ohu Kaimoana. When I asked the Minister to name who? - to name which Maori did the plundering- he could not answer me. Three times I questioned the Minister in the House, but he could not provide any evidence of plundering.

Last Thursday I left our education summit at Waipareira and headed out east across the city to Howick to the Elim Christian School. Two days earlier the school had lost six senior students and a much loved teacher, in the Maungatepopo ‘flash flood’ river drownings.
Elim School is a Christian school located within the Christian Church Centre, and draws its students from various church denominations. The students range from pre-school through the primary school years to year 13 (seventh formers). They are a very tight knit whanau based upon their collective beliefs in Christianity. |

Well, the Waipareira Education Summit was successfully concluded on Friday 18 April, after three days of stimulating challenges and revelations. Presentations were made by a broad range of providers, including many notable educationalists such as Dr David Hook, Prof Mason Durie, Prof Manuka Henare, Prof Tony Nicholson and many others.
Contributions were made by school practitioners, community leaders, politicians and from a whole host of sources, which all served to highlight the variety of challenges that lay before us to enable Maori student achievement within the public schooling mainstream system of New Zealand. |

As you all know, I have been, and still am, an advocate for working with gangs with the long-term goal of defusing gang violence. In our previous hui held at Manurewa Marae early this year, we were able to gather together previous warring factions – united in combating their new youth gang phenomenon.
Well recently the project moved on a little further ahead by Roy Dunn, Edge and Larry from the Mob and Knockers (Wiremu Allan) from the Blacks. We all gathered at -Community Hall for this next stage. On this occasion a number of youth street gang members were invited to the talks. The hui was MC’d by Brother D from Dawn Raid. |

Well believe it or not, just two weeks ago I was surrounded by snow! But, not local snow. Actually it was European snow, and I was attending a workshop meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. And what a beautiful city - built around a lake and surrounded by snow covered mountain ridges. And guess what? Geneva has the most modern urban transport on the one hand and yet grand old buildings even predating Kahungunu! (How dare they!).
The meeting was part of the campaign for the Establishment of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA). The campaign was launched in April 2007 with an appeal signed by some 400+ parliamentarians and NGO's and over 900 individuals. A small representative group of thirty attended the Geneva meeting to plan the campaign. |
