Overhang will become landslide
Some minor party leaders seem to fear that an overhang of seats in Parliament will overshadow their own influence in post-election negotiations, says the Maori Party.
“Peter Dunne’s recent complaint that the Maori Party is subverting the will of the people is utter nonsense,” said Maori Party Co-leader Dr Pita Sharples.
“The Maori Party has won our seats in fairly-fought electorate contests. The selection of our MPs is the will of the people,” he said. |

Tidy the spare bedroom, Maori warned!
The message for Maori in the latest Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Update is pretty clear – tidy up your spare bedroom and clear out the garage, because rellies are likely to want a place to stay.
That’s Dr Pita Sharples’ analysis of the complex economic data released today by Treasury, forecasting a downturn with increasing instability in the global economy.
“We face an economic downturn and job losses both here and overseas, which mean whanau members who have left home for work may turn up again looking for a place to stay,” said Dr Sharples.

Maori Party Disgusted at the Winston Peters’ Attack
Dr Sharples, Co-leader of the Maori Party today poo-poohed the personalised attack on the Maori Party by NZ First Leader, Winston Peters.
"I emphatically reject Mr Peters' criticism of us "riding the waves of sentiment" by publicly supporting him, and then "selling him out,” said Dr Sharples. |

The Maori Party is concerned at reports of new powers for the police to intercept communications, enter and search premises and detain suspects - as part of core policing.
Co-leader and Police issues spokesperson Dr Pita Sharples says ordinary people's rights to privacy, and the presumption of innocence which underpins our whole legal and judicial system, could be seriously compromised by the Search and Surveillance Powers Bill introduced to Parliament last week.
"This Bill seems to extend to ALL police the extensive powers that were granted to specialist serious crime units," said Dr Sharples.
